To cash out crypto, sell it for dollars on the exchange or app where it sits, then withdraw the money to a US bank account in your name. At Kraken a standard bank transfer (ACH) is free and arrives within 2 business days. Each sale goes on your tax return, and you pay tax on the gain.
Before you sell, save what you paid for each coin: the tax is on the difference between the sale and purchase price. Crypto prices change fast, so you may get less than you paid.
If your coins are in your own wallet, send them to your exchange account first: open Receive in the exchange app and copy the address for the same network. Sending costs a network fee, and a blockchain transfer usually cannot be reversed, so check the address twice. Moving crypto between your own wallets and accounts is not taxed, except a network fee paid in crypto, which counts as a sale.
Choose Sell, pick the coin and the amount, and check the total on the confirmation screen. A quick sell costs 1% plus a spread at Kraken, 2% for amounts under $500 in Cash App and 1.5-2.2% in Venmo. On pro platforms an order that waits for your price costs less, for example 0.40% on Kraken Pro.
Link a US bank account in the same name as your exchange account. At Kraken an ACH withdrawal is free, starts at $1 and arrives within 2 business days; an instant RTP transfer costs 1.5% (up to $50), and a wire costs $4. Kraken ACH withdrawals are not available to residents of Texas and New York.
Platforms can pause withdrawals after a new deposit. At Kraken, withdrawals are blocked for 7 days after an ACH deposit through Plaid, and a card deposit can pause them for 72 hours. How much you can withdraw depends on your verification level.
Crypto is property, so a sale creates a capital gain or loss: the sale price minus what you paid, including fees. Held more than one year, the gain is long-term and taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on income; held one year or less, it is taxed at your regular income tax rate. Swapping one coin for another and paying with crypto count as sales too.
Answer Yes to the digital asset question on Form 1040, list each sale on Form 8949 and carry the totals to Schedule D. For sales from 2025, platforms send Form 1099-DA, and from 2026 it also shows the cost basis for certain sales. If losses are bigger than gains, you can deduct up to $3,000 a year ($1,500 if married filing separately) and carry the rest forward.
On each of these you sell crypto for US dollars in your account, with some limits: in Wisconsin Binance.US has no dollar deposits or bank links, Crypto.com needs an SSN for its USD account and bank linking, and Kraken has no ACH withdrawals for residents of Texas and New York.

Sell the crypto for dollars on the exchange, choose Withdraw and send the dollars to a linked US bank account in your name. At Kraken a standard ACH withdrawal is free and arrives within 2 business days. If your crypto is in a private wallet, send it to the exchange first.
A market sale happens right away; the bank transfer takes longer. At Kraken, ACH takes 0-2 business days and a wire 0-1 business day, while an RTP transfer arrives almost instantly for 1.5%, up to $50. Some platforms also hold withdrawals for several days after a new deposit.
At some machines, yes: the CoinFlip ATM locator shows whether a machine is buy-only or also buys crypto for cash. CoinFlip fees average 4.76-19.99% depending on the machine, coin and type of transaction, much more than selling on an exchange.
Yes, if you sell for more than you paid. The gain is the sale price minus your cost, including fees. Held more than a year, it is taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%; held a year or less, at your regular income tax rate.
If you swapped one coin for another or paid for something with crypto, yes: those are taxable sales. If you only bought with dollars, held, or moved coins between your own wallets without paying the fee in crypto, you can answer No to the digital asset question on Form 1040.
Report it on Form 8949 anyway. Losses first offset your gains, and above that you can deduct up to $3,000 a year ($1,500 if married filing separately) and carry the rest to later years. A tax professional can help if you have many trades.
