ITIN loans: who gives personal loans without an SSN

Big online lenders such as Upgrade ask for an SSN. With an ITIN the choice is smaller: OneMain, Rize and credit unions that work with immigrant communities.

Credit unions lend only to members from their area, so start with the one closest to you.

Step by step

  1. 1

Check that your ITIN is active

An ITIN expires if it is not used on a federal tax return for 3 tax years in a row. An expired number can mean a refusal.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Lenders usually ask for your ITIN, a photo ID, proof of address and proof of income. Ask each lender for its own list. Latino Community Credit Union, for example, accepts a government photo ID from any country.

  3. 3

Check your offer where it does not hurt your score

Ask whether checking your offer affects your score. At OneMain, checking offers is a soft pull and applying is a hard pull. Apply only where you plan to take the loan.

  4. 4

Compare the APR and the total cost

The APR includes interest and fees. Ask how much you will pay back in total and whether the fee is taken out of the loan.

Questions people ask

Can I get a personal loan with an ITIN?

Yes, but the choice is small. OneMain accepts an ITIN on its offer check form, and Rize and several credit unions lend with an ITIN. Big online lenders such as Upgrade ask for an SSN.

Can I get a loan with only a passport?

Lenders usually ask for an SSN or an ITIN. Get an ITIN first.

What is a credit union?

A nonprofit financial cooperative owned by its members. To borrow, you first become a member, usually by living, working or studying in its area and opening a small savings account.
